tunneling

Home / glossary / tunneling

Tunneling is a quantum mechanical phenomenon that occurs when particles tunnel through barriers that they would not be able to classically overcome. This can happen due to the wave-like nature of particles, which allows them to “tunnel” through barriers that are otherwise impenetrable. Tunneling is important in many applications, such as electron tunneling microscopes and nuclear fusion reactors.
